We really dug Jesse Short and and Max Brotman's more Butthole Surfers-y noise rock band, Stress Ape, so we're really saying something when we say we like their more minimal synth influenced jams under the surname-based project, Brotman & Short, EVEN BETTER. "Heights" is a really catchy, minimal, dark and dingy-basement groovy record that sounds authentically 80s, yet, like any good pop record should, completely timeless. Unlike many of the folks aping the genre's forefathers, Brotman & Short keep it simple and concise, at times sounding a bit like a more minimal, less angry Pop. 1280 on a heavy Cabaret Voltaire, Suicide, and Tuxedomoon (John) Bender (get it? Bender?). There's no hint of cheesiness (sometimes a distracting factor on other records in the genre) at all, just dark, minimal, synthetic drums and key waves with the blasé vocal mixed just right. This is the duo's first vinyl release on the fantastically named Cold Dick label. It's limited to 500 copies and comes recommended from on high. A best of 2011 LP list contender fer sher.
